@JQBMusicandTutorials After some research, this demo was part of the Netphoria leaks from 2014. I had completely forgotten because I remember The Pumpkins suing the leaker. Apparently, he had a grievance with them and leaked a bunch of unreleased songs in Netphoria.

The song was transcribed in a songbook called Furthermore, but I don't believe it indicates an alternate tuning there either.

The alternate tuning Jars used on their first record was EABEBE. Maybe try that and see what you come up with? But I will share what I hear on Jarchives ASAP.

I apologize for blowing up this comment section. My wheels are turning on this song and I'm giving it another look. I have an old chart for this song that I'm editing now (thanks to you for reminding me I have one! Seriously, thank you). I will post a comment saying it's ready when I have it done. You can use it (it's a Google Doc, totally free of charge) to help with your playing of the song.

Here's a reply I got to my inquiry: "Okay - I may have figured it out. (Forgive me, readers, what ensues is a bunch of guitar jargon)... Guitar 2 (which opens the track) is indeed in EABEBE or something similar. On the original version you can definitely hear that opening melodic line at the beginning, probably played on the A string, against the droning low E. If you listen very carefully, you can hear this opening melodic line is doubled an octave above, (how many times have I listened to this song and never noticed this!). I'm not a *super* experienced guitar player so I could be wrong, but I think this means that the guitarist is maintaining the same finger positions relative to each other as he moves up and down the fret board on the A string and one of the higher strings. Pretty sure this means it’s not standard tuning. Furthermore (no pun intended), listen to the Furthermore version. Here the lead comes in first on electric, but listen to the final chord of the intro after Matt comes in. The tuning sounds very EABEBE. Edit -- Let me clarify that final sentence a bit more: When Matt comes in, you can hear the higher open strings much more clearly than on the studio version, and that at least gives away guitar 2 is not in standard tuning. Which tuning exactly, I'm not certain, but it sounds EABEBE-ish."

I need to do a new tutorial video! This recording has some ideas that my older videos don't. The song is fairly playable with a capo on the third fret without using the EABEBE tuning. I'll get to work on a new tutorial.

Thanks! Finding out how key changes work was a big help in my understand of things. As a kid, I didn't try to watch the guys as they played the songs at shows. I guess the 11th hour DVD could be of help with seeing more of how they play the songs.

Sometimes you go by how the chord you're playing sounds. If it's agreeable with what's happening when you play along with the record, you have to be on the right track. Understanding how chords are named is still a bit above my music theory understanding lol.

EABEBE😅? The short answer is if there's a name for it, I don't know what it is. Music Theory wise, it sort of an open power chord type tuning. To an extent, it makes the fingerings easier for doing chords than it would be if a guitar is in standard tuning or even drop D tuning. An example would be doing a G major chord. With a capo in the third fret, you just press down the A string. The notes become GDGDGD, which technically is a G5 chord throughout. The third of the chord, a B note, isn't there, so another instrument or voice has room to complete the chord, in a matter of saying. If you sang a B note, it makes the overall chord you're doing a major. It's interesting which ways you can take with this "open" type chording structure. I apologize if that was long winded.

Thank you for the information! This one and Boy on a String have thrown me for a loop. I suppose using the EABEBE tuning and re-examing the chords the book offers while applying the tuning might help. I also try to watch videos of the guys performing the song so I can see where hands are going. With that, I try to glean what I can. Maybe one day the guys themselves will explain things. But part of me doesn't want to know so the mystery keeps me chasing these songs. It's always good to learn anyway.
